The Yankees have officially announced John Sterling will be retiring, effective immediately.🎙️

He called 5,420 regular season Yankees games and 211 postseason Yankees games since 1989. He will be honored in a pregame ceremony on April 20.

SI: When did you make this decision?

Sterling: I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. I should’ve done it March 1. All during the winter, October, November, December, January, February, March, I lived the greatest life and I rued the beginning of the season. I should’ve quit then.

But that's beside the point. That's over and done with. I couldn’t be happier. I’m thrilled. I can’t wait to get off the air. I’ve been on the air since Feb. 1, 1960 and I’m tired. I wanna do what I want like I did from October through March, and I will.
